Here are answers to frequently asked questions by drivers.

  • Are children and infants included in the overall capacity on Tours?

    The taxi vehicle’s capacity includes adults, children, and infants. Children/infants are bodies, therefore, they must be counted as passengers.  A taxi operator may choose not to charge the tour fare for a child/infant, however, that is to the driver’s discretion.  In the event of an emergency or accident involving a taxi, actions would be taken for each occupant including a child/infant as well as the adult(s).  All taxi vehicles must have a seating capacity sign posted on the outside of their vehicle (by law).

  • Can drivers attend a Taxi Cab Commission Board meeting?

    The Taxi Cab Commission is a Public Board. Citizens, including drivers, are invited to attend as observers. Agenda items discussed in Executive Session are not open to the public.

  • When does the Taxi Cab Commission Board meet?

    The Taxi Cab Commission meets quarterly on the last Thursday of every third month. (pending board discussion and approval)

  • Can a driver lend his taxi to another licensed driver for one week while the owner is away on vacation?

    Only the lease holder is permitted to operate a taxi vehicle under a lease agreement. Anyone with a Class C license can operate the vehicle providing that the operator owns the medallion and vehicle.

  • Can St. John taxi Cab Operators take passengers on the ferry back to St. Thomas?

    Taxi Cab Operators on St. John can bring their vehicles to St. Thomas for maintenance /repair service and personal errands…including grocery shopping, etc.

  • Can St. Thomas taxi Cab Operators take passengers on the ferry badge to St. John?

    It is unlawful for taxi Operators on St. Thomas to take their vehicles to St. John with or without passengers.

  • How can a driver apply for the Department of Tourism/First Bank sponsored Commercial Credit Card Machine?

    Licensed Taxi Operators with valid identification can apply at any Frist Bank in the Virgin Islands. Drivers will be required to open a Commercial Checking Account to activate the service.

  • How can a driver get status of past due fees?

    Any taxi cab driver/operator may visit the Taxi Cab Commission office during business hours and present identification including a valid operator’s badge to obtain the status of pending fees owed.

  • When are Medallion and Business License fees due?

    The expiration date for Business Licenses and Medallions are on the last day of the anniversary month.

  • Can multiple drivers operate on one single Medallion?

    Multiple drivers/operators can operate on a single Medallion only when working under a uniform trade name or business license with a notarized letter from the business owner.
    All drivers must have an Operators Badge.

  • Can Medallions be transferred between islands?

    Transfer of a medallion between islands is permitted with the approval of the Taxicab Commission. Following the date of the transfer, no medallion can be transferred or offered for sale for a period of five years. If the island of residence remains the same, the Taxicab Transfer of a medallion between islands is permitted with the approval of the Taxicab Commission. Following the date of the transfer, no medallion can be transferred or offered for sale for a period of five years. If the island of residence remains the same, the Taxicab Commission may approve the transfer of a medallion when the applicant provides the necessary documentation and the Commission undoubtedly determines an extreme hardship case exists.

  • Can I build a new safari?

    All new safaris must be build by a certified builder and meet highway safety standards.

  • What documents do I need to renew my business license or lease?

  • When are medallions available for purchase?

    Medallion auctions are held in December each year. The exact date of the auction is announced in November. Remember, only veterans are eligible to buy medallions through the auction. All others must purchase their medallions from a veteran.

  • Who can buy a medallion?

    New medallions are only available to veterans. If you are not a veteran, you may purchase a medallion from a veteran.
